GoodGUI is a frontend for Cowering's GoodTools. The GoodTools are rom management tools designed to perform many different functions for your rom collections. The rom functions allow you to rename, sort, scan, list, move and more for numerous systems. GoodGUI is a graphical user interface that attempts to aid in the ease of use for these command line tools as well as provide some helpful functions of its own.
My love for Arcade, Atari, NES, SNES, etc. lead to a passion for emulation and a madness for rom collecting. I always loved computers and gaming, but never really got into programming until I decided I wanted to make a program like GoodWindows with a few tweaks of my own. I read some tutorials on programming and bought C# The Complete Reference and got to work on GoodGUI. In February of 2005 I decided to release my work to the public and was pleasantly surprised with the wonderful comments I received. Several versions were released as I had plenty of bugs to squash and multiple requests to implement tools and options. GoodGUI v1.4 was the last public release using the .net Framework.
Version 2.0 came about as I wanted to learn more about C++ and more specifically cross platform programming. The Qt application and UI framework seemed like a good fit as it allows for access to Windows, Linux and OS X with minimal coding changes. With little C++ coding experience I picked up C++ Primer Plus and actually read all 1200 pages. I found the book to be very helpful and easy to read.
Future versions of GoodGUI may include dat, xml or other modes for rom management, but for now it remains in its original form as a GUI frontend for Cowering's GoodTools. I do not plan to work on this version for quite some time if ever. With a newborn son and wife to give me "direction" my personal projects have dropped on my priority list.
All in all GoodGUI has been a great learning experience that has allowed me to contribute something to a community that has provided me with countless hours of enjoyment.
Believe it or not I've actually had a few people over the years request to send me money for my work on GoodGUI. For those few the PayPal button above is for you. I also added an Amazon.com widget to this page to allow people to search and buy something they need while at the same time contribute to GoodGUI. I receive a small percentage of the purchase price for each item purchased through the widget. Remember I have a newborn son so don't be afraid to come back for multiple purchases ;)
